Robert Stewart, a veteran of the War of 1812, was a successful merchant and a leading member of First Presbyterian Church in Mercer. He and his wife, the former Maria Young, had ten children, including Elizabeth Stewart Kilgore. Elizabeth was born in 1808, married James Kilgore, and helped him with his Underground Railroad activities. She died in 1876 and is buried beside her husband in Old Mercer Graveyard.
Robert Stewart was born in Cumberland or Franklin CO. PA. He was a farmer, in Lackawannock Twp and a store keeper in Mercer PA. Mary Young was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Elder Young, married 1780 in Carlisle, PA. Elizabeth Elder (1762 - 1825) was the daughter of David and Margery Stewart Elder.
John Young (1746 - 1826) was a private in Col Irwin's 6th PA regiment. He was born in Franklin Co, PA and died in Mercer Co, PA. David Elder (1742 - 1813) served as a private in Cumberland CO PA Militia in 1782. He was born in Franklin CO, PA and died there. It is thought that Margery Stewart, the wife of David Elder, was the sister of LT Wm Stewart. (HIR)
John and Elizabeth Elder Young came to Mercer Co. in 1804 and are buried near New Willmington PA. Mary's sister Elizabeth (b 1795) married Charles Stewart of Ohio. When Mary Young died in 1872, Robert Stewart married Mrs Sarah Shipler who had 6 children of her own. Robert Stewart was an overseer in Lackawannock twp in the year 1807 and he was a supervisor in the same twp in 1808. (History of Mercer Co PA)
