Elder, John Ritchey (b. 7 DEC 1820, d. AFT 1900)
Note: b. December 7, 1820 , in Dauphin county, Pa. At the time of his birth, there were present in the house three grandmothers, (Elder , Ritchey , and Ritchey No. 2,) and two great-grandfathers, (Espy and Ferguson ,) showing he comes of a long-lived race. When he was thirteen years old, his parents removed to Indianapolis , where his boyhood was spent; was educated at Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa. , from whence he entered the publishing house of Robert Craighead , New York city ; in 1848 , returned to Indianapolis , and has since been identified with the public interests of that city; in 1849 became editor and publisher of The Locomotive, a popular weekly paper, which he conducted until 1860 , when, with John H. Harkness , purchased the Indianapolis Daily Sentinel, which they published until 1866 ; he was for some years president of the Water Works Company, at the same time holding the honorable position of president of the Board of City Schools; later treasurer of the Indianapolis, Decatur and Springfield railroad. Since 1882 has been engaged in the construction of the Mississippi , Terre au B?uf and Lake railroad of Louisiana , running into New Orleans , and is president of the road. Mr. Elder was twice married; m. first, December 19, 1848 , at Indianapolis, Ind. , by Rev. W. Myers , Julia Ann Ohr , who d. April 9, 1853 , and had issue:
