Note: died from of congestion of the brain (hydrocephalus, Acquired hydrocephalus may result from intraventricular hemorrhage, meningitis, head trauma, tumors and cysts. Hydrocephalus is believed to occur in about 2 out of 1,000 births. The incidences of adult-onset hydrocephalus and acquired hydrocephalus are not known.) , caused by over-exertion while preparing to enter the ministry.

Doll ; received a classical education at the Lebanon Academy, and at the age of sixteen commenced the study of medicine with Professor Henry Childs , of Berkshire Medical College, Pittsfield, Mass. ; in 1849 attended a course of lectures in that institution, and also the lectures of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York city ; then returned to Lebaanon , entered the office of Dr. John W. Gloninger as a student, subsequently attending two full courses of lectures in the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania , from which he graduated in April, 1852 : the winter of 1852-3 he spent in the hospitals of Philadelphia , and in November of the latter year entered upon the practice of his profession at Lebanon , where he has continued to reside; for fifteen successive years was appointed by the directors of the poor physician to the county hospital, was one of the examining surgeons for the Ninety-third Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers before it was mustered into service during the late war, second lieutenant of the Lebanon county cavalry company during the emergency in 1863 , and subsequently examining pension surgeon for the Government; was one of the directors of the Lebanon National Bank, one of the founders and directors of the Farmers' and Mechanics' Bank, and a director of the Lebanon Manufacturing Company;

When Dr. William Moore Guilford died in 1938, he was the oldest living graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the oldest practicing physician in the U.S.

Andrew Jackson was President when William was born in 1832. Clay, Webster and Calhoun were members of the Senate when he was a schoolboy, and Louis Pasteur did not develop his germ theories until nine years after Dr. Guilford's graduation from medical school in 1852.

Before the outbreak of the Civil War he had a thriving practice in Lebanon, PA where he cast his first vote in 1853. At first he was a Whig and later became a Republican.

His patients were scattered over a wide area, and Dr. Gulford with his satchel in hand made his professional calls with horse and buggy in good weather and on horseback when the roads were particularly bad. He was a member of the medical associations of his day.

Flags on the campus of the Univ. of PA were lowered to half-mast in a day of mourning at his passing.

According to the Biographical Annals of Lebanon County, pp. 37-38, Dr. Guilford was a prominent factor in the progress and development of Lebanon and had been connected at various times with many of the leading financial enterprises of the city. He was one of the founders of and a director in the Farmers and Mechanics Bank, a director in the Lebanon National Bank, the Lebanon Trust & Safe Deposit Bank, the Lebanon Manufacturing Co., and other organizations.

Dr. Guilford was always pleasantly associated with his brother physicians. He was a member of the Lebanon Co. Medical Society, of which he was president in 1892; of the Medical Scoiety of the State of PA, being a member of its board of censors; of the AMA; was president of the board of pension examiners in 1870; was presedent of the medical staff of the Good Samritan Hospital since 1889 and visiting physician of the same; was consulting physician to the PA State asylum for the Chronic Insane in 1894-1903, and was vice-president of its consulting staff since 1894; was president of the city board of health in 1887-88; was one of the censors of the Medico-Chirurgical College of Philadelphia; in 1863 was second lieutenant of the surgeons for the Ninety-third PA Volunteer Infantry, prior to its muster into the service for the Civil War; and for 15 successive years was appointed by the directors of the poor as physician to the County Hospital. To those who can appreciate the duties attendant upon so many public offices of reponsibility, it was a matter of wonder that Dr. Guilford had so efficiently performed every duty, and in the meantime give careful and conscientious attention to an absorbing practice.

On 12 Nov 1856 Dr. Guilford was united in marriage with Mary, daughter of John Elder, and great-granddaughter of Rev. John Elder, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh, and for 60 years pastor of Paxton Presbyterian Church, where he was ordained 21 Dec 1738. Four of the sons of Rev. John Elder were officers in the Revolutionary army. The mother of Mrs. Guilford was Jane Henderson Richie, a native of Dauphin Co., PA.

At Lebanon today, men who followed in his footsteps in the practice of medicine carried the body of Dr. William M. Guilford to the grave, their tribute to the memory of the oldest physician in the State. He was two weeks past his 106th birthday when he died Saturday. He was graduated from University of Pennsylvania medical school in 1852 – 86 years ago. Soon after his anniversary he contracted a cold. Then Pneumonia set in.
