Indiana Messenger (Indiana, Pennsylvania) > 1902 > May > 28

Mrs. Sarah Elder Craighead.

A mother in Isreal departed – one whose lovely character seemed equally the product of honorable ancestry and Christian culture. Beloved of her acquaintances, who all were friends, she was idolized by her nearest relatives. Though physically delicate and retiring, she diffused around her a positive but unpretentious influence for good. Her life was a rich though gentle harmony of duty and service.

Living in the home of her birth for over sixty years, in an atmosphere of genial affection and fervent piety; and united with one who was worthy of her in all the essentials of a noble manhood, she combined, in a rare degree, the domestic virtues with literary taste and poetic temperament.

In keeping with the above were her self abnegation, her sympathy with others, her ready helpfulness without reproof, her habit of seeing the good side of things and her loyalty to her early friendships.

Mrs. Craighead was the daughter of David Elder, of Eldersridge and of Julia Sherer, of Dauphin county, Pennsylvania. She was born in Eldersridge in 1835; where she also married in 1860, and where she lived continuously till her removal to Indiana in February, 1896.

Mrs. Craighead has been in delicate health for some years, but more especially since the death, some ten months ago, of her eminent husband, Hon. Samuel Judson Craighead, who was county superintendent for several terms. She spent last winter visiting her son in Oklahoma, returning home on the 6th and dying on the 15th at 6:15 p.m.

Mrs Craighead was the only sister of the late Rev. Dr. J. S. Elder of Clarion. She is survived by three sons and four daughters.

The sons are: Rev. David Elder of Craighead, pastor of the Second Presbyterian church, of Mercer, PA.; George V. United States Post office inspector of Coshocton, Ohio; and Rev. James R pastor of the Presbyterian church of Blackwell, Oklahoma.

The daughters are Julia E. and Marie E., at home; Emeline, a teacher of Dr. Ely’s school, Danville Kentucky; and Nancy B., a member of the graduating class of the Woman’s medical college, Philadelphia.

Craighead, Samuel Judson (b. 5 DEC 1834, d. 4 JUL 1901)

Obituary of S.J. Craighead

Samuel Judson Craighead died at his home in this place July 4, 1901. Deceased was born near Canonsburg, Washington county, December 5 1834, and was the second child of George and Elizabeth Craighead. The subject of this sketch early evinced a desire to secure and education and in 1858 graduated from Jefferson college. He was principal of Dulap’s Creek Academy, Fayette county, from 1858 to 1860. He then came to Indiana county and was a prominent instructor in the famous Eldersridge academy, in Young township, from 1865 to 1878, when he was elected county superintendent of public schools, which position he filled most credibly for six years. In 1886 he was elected to the Pennsylvania legislature, and served his constituents faithfully and intelligently.

Oct 11 1860, he married the only daughter of David Elder of Eldersridge, who survives him. The children are Rev. David E, of Emlenton, Pa; George V., post office inspector, residing at Wilkinsburg; Julia E., at home; Rev. James R.E., Blackwell, Oklahoma; Sarah Marie and Mary Emeline, teachers and Nancy Bell, senior in the Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by one brother, James T Craighead, of Washington, PA and one sister, Mrs. Rev. A Donaldson, D.D. of this place.

At the early age of 14 years he united with Center Presbyterian church upon profession of faith. He was a ruling elder in the Eldersridge Presbyterian church at Eldersridge for 26 years and Sabbath School superintendent at the same place for 11 years.

In public and private life Mr Craighead was recognized as an honorable and up-right man, and his word was as good as his bond. His circle of friends was large and he never violated a confidence. He was essentially a domestic man, and never was happier than when in the family circle. He had hosts of warm friends, and bur few, if any, enemies. He was a man of discernment, and it was worth much to be able to call him your friend; and his friendship was as true as the needle to the pole. He took a deep interest in church and state and his wise counsel was often sought in public affairs, and no man was held in higher esteem in the community in which he lived, and in which he was so familiar a figure. Though his children are all grown up, his interest in their welfare never waned, and the affection between parent and children never grew cold. It is in the family circle that his kindly presence and fatherly counsel and advice will be most severely missed.
But he has gone to his reward.
