Bangs enlisted in the Revolutionary War in March 1778, served as private in Captains Isaac Pope's and S. Learned's Companies, Colonel William Shepard's Fourth Massachusetts Regiment; was in the Battle of Monmouth, in the siege of Yorktown and capture of Cornwallis and discharged in June 1783. He served also as Washington's body guard. Bangs was cited in Revolutionary War for brave deeds.

Bangs was in the 1800 census in Arlington, Bennington, VT with one child (Simeon) under 10 and his wife Phoebe. I don't know where his daughter, Polly, was. She would have been 7 years old. John Lillie lived next door. In the 1810 census, Bangs was in Pownal, Bennington, Vt. He had one son under 10 (probably Anson) and one daughter under 10, Deborah. I don't know where Simon or Simeon were. Possibly they were with their grandfather, John Lillie. By 1818 when he applied for Revolutionary War Pension, he was in Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY. The only child living with him in 1820 was Anson.

Burgess, Bangs, Phebe, W20818, MA Line, soldier applied 6 Apr 1818 Rensselaer County, NY, aged 72, a resident of Hoosick NY, in 1820 soldier had a wife Phebe, aged 53, and 1 child Anson. Soldier married Phebe Lillie in 1780, Canterbury, CT and soldier died 29 or 30 Apr 1822 or 1823 at Livonia NY. Widow died 11 Mar 1845, aged about 78. Children shown were: Jeduthan, Reuben, Truston, Anson (aged 13 in 1820), Polly, Deborah, Simeon and Simon. In 1853, surviving children were: Polly Adams (aged 60), Simeon (aged 57), Simon or Symon (aged 51) and Deborah Powell (aged 49). In 1855, Polly and William Adams lived in Livonia, NY; in 1858, Simeon lived Erie County PA. In 1852, Josephine Adams was a witness for widow, in 1853, Robert and Dorothy Adams signed affidavit in Livingston county NY (no relationship stated), in Mar 1855 S. R. Powell lived in Livonia NY and in Mar 1856, he was a resident of Allegan County, MI. In 1855, T.B. Powell the father of S.R. Powell lived in Livonia but their relationship to soldier's daughter Deborah not stated. In Oct 1854, Joseph Lillie was aged 83 and Benjamin Lillie was aged 80 years 11 months and made affidavit in Ashtabula County, OH (they were brothers of widow). In 1855, a John Lilley was a physician aged 57 of Concord in Erie County, PA, but no relationship to family was stated. (From "Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files", Page 468).
In the affidavit made in Hoosick, Rensselaer County, Bangs states: "I am a labourer unable to support myself, on account of old age, the loss of the use of one arm by the injury of it. I have a wife named Phebe 53 years, and one child 12 years old named Anson, resident in my family."
