Fort Pierce News Tribune (Fort Pierce, Florida) > 1953 > June > 26
Mailman (Not Barefoot) Retires after 31 years, 24 of them as Rural Carrier

Harvey A Zuver wasn’t worrying much today whether he’d put the right letter in the right slot at the local post office, or counted out correctly the change from a ten dollar bill for a three-cent postage stamp.

In fact, he wasn’t worrying at all. On the other hand, he was looking forward to some recreation, rest and ease after all these years of work.

Zuver flipped his last letter into the box Thursday, checked out for keeps and retired – after 31 years service with the Post Office Department.

His service with the department started as postmaster at Indrio in 1922. The office was discontinued a couple of years later – the great boom for which Indrio was slated having gone up the spout along with a lot of others.

Shortly afterwards, Zuver took over as carrier for old rural route No. 2 here, which then included the old North Dixie, St. Lucie and Fort Pierce Farms areas. Two years later he took over route 1. which included the Indian River drive, White City, Okeechobee road, and Ten-Mile areas – now divided into three routes. He held forth on that route for some 24 years, carrying cheer day by day to his patrons with their letters and papers, mail order catalogs, seeds and what have you, and also serving as a sort of liaison messenger and envoy between the rural dwellers and townspeople as he plugged along on his 60 mile journey day after day.

Four years ago the rural mailman (but not barefoot) decided he’d seen enough of the “country” and transferred to office duty, taking over the general delivery window, where he held forth until his retirement.

Born in Pennsylvania, Zuver came here with his wife, Fern, in 1921 from Oklahoma and was affiliated with the old East Coast Development Co. when he took over the Indrio post office job. A veteran of World War I, Zuver served with C company of the 304th Field Signal Battalion of the 79th division until he was gassed in the Meuse-Argonne operations and hospitalized. Upon his return to service he was assigned to C company, 101st Signal Corps battalion of the famous 26th “Yankee” division until the conclusion of the war. He landed back in the States, at Boston, in May of 1919 – and any surviving member of the outfit will grow enthusiastic when he starts telling you of the hilarious homecoming reception which the division was accorded.

Zuver has been active in veterans’ affairs, having served as commander of the local American Legion post and in other capacities, and has also long been active in the First Presbyterian church.

And now Zuver plans to do some resting, look after his property interests, and maybe do some hunting and fishing.

Must be nice, eh?
