It states that Cornelius was a farmer. On our vacation to Somerset on July 17, 2002 Pat & I found Cornelius and Elizabeth Witt's burial sites in St. John's Cemetery in Larimer Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

Obituary is as follows: Cornelius H. Witt April11, 1893, Larimer. Cornelius H. Witt, aged 70 years and 24days. Mr. Witt was born in this county (Somerset), March 18, 1823. He was married to Elizabeth M. Johnson June 7, 1849. The union was blessed with five children, one son and four daughters, one of whom died about four years ago Emma. When the war for the Union broke out, although thirty eight years of age, he was among the first to respond to the call of Father Abraham, enlisting in Company G. 5th Penna Volunteers, General Jacob M. Campbell commanding. He met death almost thirty years later, as courageously as he had faced him on the field. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. Mankamuer and Eld. S.Hoover, who spoke words of encouragement and sympathy to the bereaved widow and children. His remains rest in the Evangelical grave yard. Peace to his ashes.

This information is from Rich Boyer, January 2005, gathered from Carol Hepburn's research. She quotes "History of Bedford and Somerset County, by William H. Welfley, 1906 3 Volumes, 1802pp. "Jacob Witt, arevolutionary soldier, was of scotch origin. He was one of the pioneers of this county, and settled near Wellersburg, in Southampton Township, where the house that he built is still standing. He carried on farming and distilling until 1830, when he died at the age of 83. His sons were John, Samuel, and Jacob. John was born in Lehigh County in 1785 and came to this county in 1812. He followed surveying and was county register, sheriff and recorder. At the time of his death he owned 9,000 acres in this county. He married Catherine Davis and was father of four children: Samuel, John L., Cornelius, and Catherine. John L. was a surveyor and resides in Somerset.

Cornelius H. is a farmer, living in the northern part of the township. He was a solder in the rebellion for over 3 years." Cornelius was baptized in 1824 in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, USA. Cornelius Heyer son of John and Catherine Witt, F. Heyer and Mary Wells, witnesses.

Shared by Merikay Mestad. Can we assume the middle name of Heyer came from this friend and witness? Merikay Mestad shared that Cornelius was a farmer and a shingle maker. Cornelius and his family lived above Wellersburg on the road to Cook Cemetery, Gerz Cemetery, Kennel's Mills, Palo Alto. Cornelius served in the Civil War in Company G. of the 54th Pennsylvania Volunteers as a private. They raised a foster daughter, Martha Witt, who married John Cohick. Martha is mentioned as a child of Alice (Cornelius's daughter), in the obituaries of Alice and Valentine Yahnert.

In the will of John Witt #4-1859 written September 22, 1854.states that 1/4 part of his estate willed to his son, Cornelius H. Witt's child, John Marion Witt and any other child born here after... Orphan's Court Records state that on April 24, 1865 the petition of Cornelius H Witt mentions description of the land the three minor children of Cornelius.

Witt, George F (b. SEP 1877, d. ?)
Note: History of Bedford and Somerset Counties, Pennsylvania" Bedford County by E. Howard Blackburn; Somerset County by William H. Welfley; v.3, Pub. The Lewis Publishing Company, New York/Chicago 1906, ppg. 179/80
"WITT and WALKER.

Among the business men of energy and ambition in the borough of Somerset, the members of this well known firm rank high. The firm is comprised of George F. Witt and C. B. Walker. The former was born in Somerset, September 10, 1877, son of George W. Witt and wife.

The father was a foundry man the best years of his life, and still resides in Somerset. When about seventeen years of age, Mr. Witt commenced to learn the butcher's business with George Auman, of Somerset. He then attended school for a time, which better qualified him for the activities of a business career. He then worked at the trade five or six years at Somerset and a suburb of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, after which he returned to his native borough and became one of the firm of Davis & Witt, which was succeeded by Witt & Baker, who finally sold the market, and Mr. Witt was employed in the Seibert market, the one he had formerly owned an interest in.

Finally Mr. Witt purchased the business from Seibert and continued to operate it alone from 1904 to May 17, 1905, when he took for his business partner a farmer, C. B. Walker, whose farm home is situated about four miles from the borough of Somerset, Pennsylvania. The firm is now known as Witt & Walker. They occupy No. 6 North Cross Street, where they own a good one-story business house, which is on a leased lot. They buy and slaughter nearly all the meats they sell. They also buy and handle fish, game and poultry and put up their own ice, and in the winter months make a specialty of curing meats.

Mr. Walker, the junior member of the firm, attends largely to the buying of the stock consumed in the market. Much of this live stock is bought in Bedford county, Pennsylvania. Their market is indeed a model for neatness and well selected meats. Orders by telephone are promptly delivered about the borough, in seasonable market hours.

Mr. Witt married, July 6, 1904, Lottie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shoemaker, farmers, living in Milford township, Somerset county, Pennsylvania. By the union one child has been born: Harold Edward, September 11, 1905.

Of Mr. Walker, the junior member, it may be said that he was born May 23, 1858, the son of Levy and Mary Walker, of Somerset township, Somerset county, Pennsylvania. He was reared to farm labor and still owns and operates a good farm in Somerset township, Somerset county. He married, May 31, 1885, Mary Etta Spangler, daughter of Edward F. and Elizabeth Spangler, and was born July 30, 1866."

Witt, George Washington (b. 18 NOV 1848, d. OCT 1923)
Note: Indiana Weekly Messenger, Indiana, Pennsylvania

May 16, 1888

A few days since a little two-and-a-half year old daughter of George Witt, of Somerset, escaped her mother?s attention and went into the yard in the rear of the house, where some men had been engaged making a fence. She had only been gone about twenty minutes when her mother started in search of her and was horrified to find the child in a post-hole dead. The poor little thing had fallen into the hole head foremost and was drowned in a few inches of water that collected in the bottom.
