Reference to South causes Northern Vet to Leave Luncheon

Bradford, PA., May 31 (AP). – A speaker’s assertion that “xxx certainly the south much on their side, too xxx” prompted one of Bradford’s two surviving Civil War veterans to withdraw abruptly from a Memorial Day luncheon where he was an honored guest.

Harvey Phillips made the statement while introducing motion pictures of the Blue and Gray reunion at Gettysburg last July.

“He's got too much talk,” declared 91-year-old E. D. Ostrander. “Show me how to get out of here.”

The veteran, who volunteered when 15 marched with Sherman’s forces through Georgia, later explained: “It disgusted me and I just got up and left. I think that man better go south. They’ll appreciate him there.”

The other veteran and honored guest, Homer Chatley, 93, remained.

Chatley, Francis (b. 11 MAY 1770, d. 29 JAN 1849)
Note: Early Settlers of Beaver and Mercer Counties, PA

Credit for most history and much of the genealogy presented here goes to Cyrus Chatley who prepared and privately published The Chatley and Spear Families (1928). Cyrus in turn acknowledges the contribution of his brother, Addison Chatley, which he says "this record is largely the writing of Addison Chatley and of the things said in reference to him."

THE CHATLEY & SPEAR FAMILIES: (Copy at Mercer Co Hist. Society)
Written by Cyrus Chatley about 1928

This narrative includes the record of three larte families in America, closely related: The Chatley family and two Spear families. The progenitors were Francis Chatley and his two brothers-in-law, John Spear and Jared Spear. Francis Chatley emigrated to America in the year 1798, Jered Spear in the year 1837 and John Spear about 1850. It would be interesting to remember that Francis Chatley, coming to this country during George Washington's administration, came as a pioneer, and in a time when just such men were needed to begin the settlement of the great Mississippi Valley. Like Abraham of old, he left his native land, not knowing whither he went. When he landed in Philadelphia, all his earthly goods he carried in a pack on his back. We can imagine that we see him walking the streets with his old fashioned breeches and long stocking and that we are saying, "There goes an Irishman." If we remember that when he decided to go to Western Pa., there were no railroads, no canals, and not even stage coaches, we can conceive of some of the hardships of the undertaking. It will be observed that this record is largely the writings of Addison Chatley and of the things said in reference to him. Without the records he kept, this narrative would not have been possible.
C. CHATLEY

When Francis was a child he had an attack of small pox, one coming out in his eye, and as a consequence he was blind of one eye. Had Francis remained with his father, he would have inherited the estate; but, God, in His providence, ruled it otherwise, and led him to the backwoods of America, where he was destined to bring about what was marked out for him. When about 25 years of age, he became dissatisfied and began to talk about emigrating to America. So his father said to him; "Do you intend to go to America?" "Father, I do ." said he. "Then," said his father, " Go and God's blessing go with you". "But, what have I to go with?" said he; "you have money of your own." said his father, "take it and God bless you." "My father, " said he, "that is all I ask." So he decided to go to America. Some of his friends advised him to take a wife with him. Accordingley, he persuaded Rebecca Spear, a young lady with whom he had been keeping company, to share the fortunes of the world with him. So they planned to go to America, and they were married. When her father, Mr. Andrew Spear, heard of the affair he made haste to prevent it, but he was too late; they were married before he arrived. But he said to her: "Since it is so., act the part of a good wife, and may God's blessing go with you." She was now 18 years of age. When they were taking their final leave his father was much affected and wished him to stay, but, he said that it was now too late. "If you come back," said he, all I have shall fall to you". But he would not be persuaded. So he bade farewell Ireland, to father, mother and sisters and set sail from Londonderry, for the "Land of the Free".

Francis Chatley and Rebecca Spear, his young wife left Londonderry, Ireland in spring 1798. They landed in Philadelphia in May 1798. He first hired out as farm labor in New Jersey. About year later the Chatleys, wanting to claim a tract of unsettled land, moved on to Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Although their original destination was Washington County, but as noted in The Chatley and Spear Families (p.4), "they stopped to stay one night with a man by the name of Billy Miller, who had taken up 400 acres of land in Beaver Co, on Little Beaver Creek. Miller had in his employ a man who moved upon the land and was to have 100 acres for making the settlement. The man became dissatisfied and so Milled asked Francis Chatley to take the man's place and get the 100 acres; Miller also promised to furnish provisions until Chatley could raise a crop. The offer was accepted. So Miller conducted them to the place where they lived all the rest of their lives."

In the year 1830 Francis Chatley and his sons secured a 600 acre section of land in French Creek township in the N.E. Corner of Mercer County, PA, which they divided into seven lots or farms for: sons, Samuel, Andrew, John, Ahijah and daughters Betsy married to John Campbell. Jane married to Billy Andrews, and Polly with her sons Frank and Jo Steen. Ahijah never settled on his lot, but sold it to Mathew Andrews who took possession in 1853. Ahijah remained on the "old homestead" the remainder of his life.

Chatley, Addison (b. 5 MAR 1848, d. 25 FEB 1914)
Note: Mrs. Matthew J. Andrews, taking fancy to Addison, made him a member of her family with her three boys, Jo, John and Charles. The Civil War now being in progress, Andrews was drafted into the service in 1862. The year following was one of some hardship for Addison; it fell to him to chop and haul the firewood and tend the cattle and the horses and go to school. The next summer in the harves field he was overcome with heat and over-exertion, causing a severe pain in his diaphragm, from the effects of which he never fully recovered. In the year 1865 he was at home with his father and went to his home school. The teacher was his brother, Cyrus, who had been to the Edinboro State Normal school, which was recently established. The next summer he induced Addison to go there also. The year following this quite a delegation of young people from our neighborhood.
