Fashion Show to Feature Designs Done by Zuver

Designs by Frederick Zuver of Florida will be featured at the fashion show planned by the Junior Woman?s club for the evening of Feb 12th at the Pelican Yacht club.

Zuver, a resident of this community, has but recently returned to Fort Pierce to have his own shop in which he will design for specialty shops. He was formerly identified with Bunny?s Casuals of Miami, his designs having been used by Burdine?s and one of his creations featured in Pathe News.

The son of Mr and Mrs H A Zuver and more familiarly known to his many friends and acquaintances here as ?Teddy?, Zuver started his artistic career at Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, where he studied for a year. Later he was graduated from the Parson?s school of Design in New York City and then went to Paris, France to study.

In Paris he was a student of Maurice Tesard?s, was graduated from the Acadmie de Coupe de Paris and later studied Le Mood under Aline Expert at 11 place de LaMadeline.

His designs to be shown at the local style show include a navy blue short formal trimmed in fuchsia tulle and worn with a stole of navy and fuchsia; a white sheath linen with plaid silk organza fitted dusten; linen cocktail dress, with trim on one shoulder of amber silk organza, side drape and small bolero jacket; a wrap around Siamese print; calico and linen.

The Pleasantville Fire, Further Particulars

"......Building belonging to George Zuver..."

William H Wood, long a well known citizen of Titusville, has had an interesting experience as an oil producer. He came to the oil country in the spring of 1863, from Waterloo, New York. He came by way of Union City, where he visited an uncle, Mr. Wood, of the firm Wood & Johnson, manufacturers of barrels at that place, who subsequently had barrel works in Titusville, on the flats, where the radiator works now are. His first work in oil was to build a refinery on the Patterson farm, on Bull Run. His undertaking resulted favorably, and he sold his works in the summer of 1864 with a very fine profit as a whole. He then turned his attention to land speculation, was fortunate in his investments, and prosperity seemed to mark all his work for several years afterward. He operated extensively in company with the late H. L. Taylor. In September, 1867, he bought the George E. Zuver farm, two miles east of Pleasantville, and operated it for the next eight years. He drilled seventeen wells on the farm, and sold it in 1875.

State Of Pennsylvania/County of Venango

In the matter of the application of ? George E Zuver, father of James W Zuver, late of Co. H 134th Penna. Infantry for a father?s pension. No. of Application ?731916.?

Personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace for the State and County aforso which on Mar. 30th 1901, George E Zuver, aged 81 years, whose P.O. address is Pleasantville P.O., Venango Co., Pa; who having been duly sworn according to law doth depose and say: I am the surviving father of James W. Zuver late of Co. H. 134th Penna Vols. Infty. Susan Zuver was my wife and his mother. I was married to her on Apr. 7th 1842, and we lived together as husband and wife until her death in Nov. 20th 1900. Our surviving children are George Q Zuver, born Apr. 7th 1849, whose present P.O. Address is Plumer P.O., Venango Co., Pa., Mary M West, born Sept. 20th 1851, whos P.O. Adddress is Bradford, McKean Co., Pa., Lewis W Zuver, born July 17th 1854, whose P.O. Address is Pittsburgh Penna, Susan J Arnold, born March 9th 1856, whose P.O. Address is ?Bruin P.O., Butler Co., Pa.,? Thomas W Zuver, born Jan. 17th 1859, whose P.O. Address is Pleasantville P.O., Venango Co., Pa., and Leander L Zuver, born Oct. 10th 1861, whose P.O. Address is Pleasantville P.O. Venango Co., Pa. None of these children or any other person or persons was legally bound to support me in the year 1900. The preacher and all the guests at our wedding on Apr. 7th 1842, are now dead. I send the testimonials of witnesses who were at the infare or reception right after our marriage, - which was held at my father?s house, - and who saw us there together as husband and wife together and have known us through many years in the same relation. This is the very best I can now do, - as there is no record of our marriage save that written by my own hand in our family bible. My son James W Zuver, upon whom his mother and my wife drew pension (Mother?s Pen. Act 319213) from Oct. 11th 1890, until her death on Nov 20th 1900 was born on July 12th 1843, and was our first born son. My wife died without a Last Will and Testament so that now I have only dower right in what belonged to her.

We were both of us assessed with $2640 worth of property in 1900 But $1800 of this is for oil wells belonging (except for loyalty) to other parties, ? the owners paying under the leases the additional taxes beyond the value of the land for agricultural purposes. Our royalties from oil in 1900 were $89.01 ? as the oil wells produce comparatively but little oil, and of this sum I used $26.01 in the payment of money taxes, - leaving me $63 of income in 1900 from this source. From other sources my income (and our income when my wife was yet living,) - was very slight perhaps not more than $25 more in the year 1900. I do not keep any horses and only one cow and a few chickens. I am too old and feeble to do any hard work. Our place is cut up by the lines of rods used in pumping the oil wells ? so that it is worth very little now for farming purposes.

What I ask for is the transfer of the pension paid to my wife, - for both of us ? to myself for the little while I have yet to live, - because I really need it and because my first born son would, were he living now, be worth manifold more to me than the gratuity from the Government, I am now asking for. The title of but 6 acres of our land was vested in me personally ? all the rest belonged to my wife at her death. As assessed to us, we have about 45 acres of land, - really we only have about 36 acres and a good deal of that is wild rocky, unimproved land ? I should say that it is not worth more than $20, and acre, - so that what really belongs to me by deed is worth at the outside about $120, and my dower [illegible] in the rest, the use of 1/3 or $200 a year, I mean the use of $200 a year is what my dower right is worth. Our personal property is out of style and most of it has been in use a long time and if [illegible last 2 lines]

Titusville Herald, Titusville, Pennsylvania
May 5, 1900

Davis, Farel & Lytle recently finished a well on the George Zuver farm in Allegheny township, Venango county about one mile and a half southeast of Pleasantville, that filled up 200 feet of oil in the first sand over night. It made a better showing than the Wilson and Benedict well which produced 1,000 barrels the first thirty days in the same sand about a year ago. W. H. Wood, of Titusville, bought the Zuver farm in September, 1867, consisting of 170 acres, for which he paid $10,000 in cash. He drilled seventeen wells on the farm, the first one being finished on July 4, 1868 and was good for eight barrels a day. Mr. Wood disposed of the farm in September 1877 to Wood and Johnson of Union City. They held it for three years when it was sold to George E. Zuver & Sons for a pair of horses, wagon and harness, worth in all about $200, taking a mortgage for $800, and considering the farm well sold.

George Zuver Has Passed to Reward
A Man Well Known Near Pleasantville
George E. Zuver, one of the pioneers of the oil country, died at his home two miles east of Pleasantville Tuesday morning. He was 92 years of age. Until quite recently he had been in good health and was able to be about his farm. He was born in Mercer County and in the early days of the oil business came to Venango county. It is reported to the Herald, but without the stamp of authority, that Mr. Zuver was once quite wealthy and the he lost a fortune in the shifting scenes of the oil business. Since the oldest residents can remember he had been living on his farm in Allegheny township, Venango county, east of Pleasantville. He was Justice Of The Peace in that township and was held high in the repute of all men. He was a firm believer in God and the efficacy of prayer. He said not long ago that during the Civil war he prayed for the speedy and successful conclusion of the conflict and at the same time for the annihilation of the liquor traffic. He was a strong Prohibitionist and no meeting of that political organization was considered complete without him. A great sorrow came into his life about five years ago, when four of his grandchildren, the children of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Zuver, were burned to death in a fire that destroyed their parents? home. The horror of that was never forgotten by the aged man. He is survived by several children. His wife is dead. Information about the funeral could not be secured last night.

Aged Gentleman Will be Buried in Fairview

George E Zuver, whose death near Pleasantville was mentioned in the Herald of yesterday, will be buried in Fairview cemetery at Pleasantville today. Rev. Mr. Chapin, pastor of the Methodist church of that village, will be in charge of the ceremonies.

Mr. Zuver was born in Mercer county on Feb. 1, 1820. He was marred to Susan Goodman in 1842. To this union there were born nine children. Six are living as follows: George Q. and T. W. Zuver, Pleasantville: L. L. Zuver, Tionesta; L. W. Zuver, Butler; Mrs. Mary M. West, Pittsburg, and Mrs. William Arnold, Bruin, PA. There are sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. By occupation he was a carpenter and farmer. He moved from Mercer county to the homestead east of Pleasantville in 1859 and it had been his subsequent home. The man was a strong advocate for the freedom of the slaves and in the days before the war was a zealous worker on the ?underground railroad.? In 1844 he cast his first vote for James G. Burney for the presidency on the Abolitionist ticket. This was the only vote Mr. Burney received in the district. It is difficult to think of a man just dying who nearly seventy years ago was a voter. Those of a reflective mind will recall that this was before the Mexican war. It was a long way back in the history of this country. Mr. Zuver always espoused the cause of temperance. He was a capable speaker and his services were much in demand.

Warren Evening Mirror (Warren, Pennsylvania) > 1911 > February > 11

Was Once Wealthy ? It develops that George Zuver, of near Pleasantville, who died Wednesday and was buried Friday in Fairview cemetery in the boro, was at one time worth $300,000. Mr Zuver was prominent in the early oil excitement in Warren and vicinity and at Pithole and was one of the survivors of the gas explosion at Rouseville which caused the death of ten men in the early sixties. Mr Zuver was a native of Mercer County. In the Fifties he went to Pleasantville and spent the remaining of his life there and at Pithole and Oil Creek. From the earliest stages of the Oil Creek development Mr Zuver followed operations. Mr Zuver was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Surviving are these children: L. W. of Butler, G. Q. and T.W., of Pleasantville, L. L. of Tionesta, Mrs William Arnold, of Bruim, and Mrs M. M. West of Pittsburg.

The Town on the Hilltop

Pleasantville
1794-1873
By Manley C. Beebe

Pleasantville Almost Got a Railroad

On January 4, 1869, the Pleasantville News, published by Dodd & Gosgrove, launched its career, but the town evidently did not need a daily paper, as it went out of the picture in April. In June, however, the Petroleum Gaslight, a weekly paper (O. H. Jackson, publisher) took its place and continued until 1872.

In November a ten-barrel well in the green oil sand was struck on the Armstrong farm, and the search for this oil maintained a somewhat lessened interest for a few years. But Pleasantville was losing its attraction as the ?darling? of the Oil Regions and that fickle title was passing on to Rouseville and other places.

Pleasantville consolidated its position, so to speak, and made use of the wealth gained in the preceding years to improve the town. On January 8, 1870, was dedicated the new church building of the Presbyterians, who had organized a church out of the ashes of the original Concord church on Tyrell Hill and in 1867 had moved to Pleasantville. Under the name of the Pleasantville Presbyterian church, they worshipped in the old Covenanter church on State street, built in 1844. The new building, complete, cost $15,000 and was situated on East State street east of the Covenanter church, which with an addition on the front still serves as the chapel and lecture room of the organization. The church building thus dedicated with the new parsonage built in the nineties still serves the congregation.\

A year later ? in January, 1871 ? the Methodists dedicated a new building, costing $11,000 at their location, corner of Merrick and North Main, using the former church, built in 1846, as a class room. This new church stood until its demolition in April, 1923, to make room for the present substantial brick building.

Pleasantville still choose its best men to guide the reins of government.

In 1870 John F. Carll, the famous geologist, was elected as burgee, and the council which sat with him consisted of William Newkirk, Henry Dunham, Marsh goss and m. P. Barber; treasurer, D. W. Henderson; deputy burgess, Roger Sherman; attorney, m. C. Beebe; secretary, M. P. Barber.

High hopes were entertained that Pleasantville would have a railroad connecting it with Titusville and Oil City. In April, 1870, a bill was passed in the Legislature, incorporating the Titusville & Enterprise Passenger railroad, and in October of that year the Pithole railroad, with rolling stock and all equipment, was sold by the Sheriff to Harvey M. Henderson of Meadville for $61,000. The real buyer was supposed to be the Atlantic & Great Western, which planned to extend the road to Pleasantville and Titusville via Enterprise. Work started at both ends and the grade was finished to within the Borough limits on Shamburg street, equipped the entire distance with fine cut stone culverts, which existed until recently. On the other end it was carried from Titusville out through the Watson Flats to East Titusville out through the Watson Flats to East Titusville and to the ?Stone Arch.? But the magic wand of the ?Oil Spirit? being, at this time, waved over Rouseville and the lower Oil Creek regions, the enterprise declined and Pleasantville lost the chance to maintain its new growth.

The production of the Pleasantville field constantly declined. In October, the rich Armstrong farm was producing only 12 barrels daily and the neighboring Brown Bros. tract only 10 while over a mile to the north the conservative old nettle district was still producing 58. No wells were drilling in any of these districts. Thus wile the great attraction to the speculator was gone, Pleasantville still held the conservative, solid citizen, the inhabitants were still prosperous, it was a beautiful place to live and the solid element was there to stay while the excess population gradually drifted away.

Consequently when the great fire of December 23, 1871, ate the heart out of the business district, it did not prove the blight that the fires of Pithole and Petroleum Center did to those places. It cleared out buildings, many of which were substantial and which, with the shrinking of the population, would have proved superfluous and have become eyesores. The income of the citizens was yet unimpaired and they set about to rebuild with structures more suited to the needs of the community.

The fire had started in the New York Hotel on South Main street, consumed the Germer hardware store and the large St. Nicholas block on the southeast corner of main and State street; jumped across State street t the McKinney Hotel which earlier was known as the Union Hotel and was famous in the early annals of the Pleasantville Oil Excitement. It quickly consumed this building, the Deutch dry goods store and Corwin?s hardware store, as well as several other structures, stripping the block between State and Second Street, completely from Main Street up to the present residence of Dr. Proper. The other side of State Street was swept clean, clear up to the George Zuver residence, where William Fields, Jr., now lives. Sparks flew from the New York Hotel, across to the Oil regions, and the costly three-story structure, with its 150-foot front, was soon beyond salvage. Brown Brothers store, partly brick, was saved by almost superhuman effort and the Great Fire was stopped.

Pleasantville, Sept. 1 ? C. A. Holliday, who has been tearing down the old George Zuver house, about a mile from town, which he recently bought, tells some very interesting things in connection with it. The planks, he says, were two and a half inches through and eight feet long, mortised at top and bottom with wooden pins; also, 4 feet up, pins were run through. The lumber was all pine, some boards were 15 and 18 inches wide and some double tongued and grooved. Rafters were 3x3 instead of the well known 2x4. Some were 6x6. The underpinning was hand-hewn oak logs, some 161/2 feet long and 12 inches wide. The house was double-boarded in the partitions and lath and plaster on top of that. The stone cellar was 12x12. The building is at least 100 years old. Mr. Holiday said they found several dried skins of spotted adders, or ?house snakes,? three or four feet long; also garter snake skins.

Mr. Holliday is building a bungalow on the lot he has cleared on State street at the foot of Gardner Mill. He will use some of this pine lumber for the roof and sheathing. The rest of the material will be new. There will be four rooms and a bath and a covered patio. The building was designed by the Jaun brothers of Tionesta, who have the contract. The house was started Monday and by Thursday evening great progress had been made. The door and window frames are all in, the sub-floors laid, etc. It is estimated that it will be done in about six weeks. Mr. Holliday has already had offers to buy or rent the bungalow. Pleasantville seems to have a building boom this summer.

Former Resident Recalls Much Pleasantville History

Audley Zuver of Hiram, O., Visits

Pleasantville, Sept. 27 ? Audley Zuver of Hiram, O., known to his old friends as ?Aud,? who was in Titusville Sunday to visit the Drake Park Museum, called on E. V. Newkirk and other old friends in town in the afternoon. Your correspondent happened to be there and wished she might have a long session with him in reminiscing on Pleasantville history as he surely knows it. He recalls that George Zuver was the one who originally built what is remembered as ?Zeke? Rooker?s restaurant. He had a photograph ?gallery? as it was called then in that building. Some of the older settlers remember the ?Skylight.? George Zuver, he said lived in the Dutton house, which is now known as Grant August?s home. Mrs. August was Mrs. Dutton?s grand-daughter. He also said that George Zuver built the elementary school building and the S. Q. Wilson home and other brick buildings, probably the business block downtown. The brick were made a brick works near where Carl Holtz lives. Mr.. Zuver greatly regretted the passing of Miss Julia Herron as he said she took him to school on his first day at his mother?s request. He spoke of Julia?s good heartedness. He expects to spend the winter in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was brought here by Wayne Grosse, postmaster in Hiram, O.

George Henry Zuver, distributor for the Roman Automatic lubricators and oil guns has had a long identification with the automobile trade as the distributor of the Winton car. He has built up a large business. His course has always been indicative of the alertness and energy which are among his marked characteristics. He was born in Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, December 13 1855, a son of Thomas W and Nellie (Ives) Zuver, both of whom were natives of the Keystone state. His ancestors were those who served in the Revolutionary war, participating in the battle of Bunker Hill. Thomas W Zuver spent his entire life in Pennsylvania, where he was connected with the oil industry, becoming one of the prominent factors in the development of the oil fields of that state. He passed away at Pleasantville, where the mother still owns the old home, but is now spending her time in Los Angeles, California. Their family numbered eleven children, five of whom are living; Vern L., a resident of Los Angeles, ; W. E. still living at Pleasantville, Pennsylvania; Nelson and Paul, both of Los Angeles, and George Henry.

In the acquirement of his education George Henry Zuver attended the public and high schools of Pleasantville, Pennsylvania, and also the Carnegie Technical Institute, from which he was graduated as a mechanical engineer. He then became a foreman with the Westinghouse Electrical Company and remained as electrical machinery expert from 1904 until 1907, when he resigned and entered the employ of the Winton Automobile Company as a mechanic. In 1910 he became connected with the sales force of the corporation and served in that capacity until 1916. During this period he also took an active interest in military affairs and became a member of the National Guard of Michigan, in which he rose to the rank of captain of Company H, Eighteenth Infantry. He was with this company of the Mexican border from 1916 until January, 1917, and then returned to Detroit. Soon afterward he was made manager of the branch of the Winton Automobile Company in Kansas City, Missouri, where he continued until August 1917, when he purchased the business and reorganized it, under the name of George H Zuver Company, Incorporated, and capitalized for fifty thousand dollars.

"The Winton had a two-cylinder, 20-horsepower engine directly underneath the driver's seat, with a chain drive, capable of speeds up to 30 miles per hour; two speeds forward and one reverse; steering wheel on the right; no windshield and no top. It featured two of Alexander Wilton's many engineering innovations: a ratcheted lever that prevented broken arms if the engine unexpectedly backfired in the midst of being crank-started; and a hinge that allowed the steering wheel to be tipped away as the driver took his position. Leather, upholstered seats were mounted high on a wooden body painted a reddish maroon with, as the sales brochure promised, "just enough polished brass? to enliven the general effect.""

Of this company he has since been president and has been successful in the management of the undertaking. This is a close corporation and the sales in 1917 amounted to about one hundred cars. The business steadily grew through the enterprise and progressiveness of Mr. Zuver. In 1921 Mr. Zuver gave up his contract as Winton distributor and became distributor for the Roman Automatic lubricator line with headquarters at 5764 Cass avenue. He is at all time alert, ready for any emergency, and by reason of his capable management and clean business methods has gained a position of high standing in trade circles in Detroit. He is a director of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association.

On the 2d day of January, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Mr. Zuver was married to Miss Mary Boyle, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Boyle of that city, where her father is police commissioner. They have five children; Dorothy, who was born in Pittsburgh, in August, 1911; George H., Jr., Born in Pittsburgh in 1912; Katherine, born in Pittsburgh in February, 1914; Robert, born in the same city in July, 1916; and Lee Raymond, born in Detroit, in January, 1919.

Mr. Zuver in interested in various sports as indicated in his membership in the Detroit Yacht Club, the Detroit Riding and Hunt Club and the Detroit Automobile Club and his support of progressive measures for the welfare, up building and benefit of Detroit is manifest in his connection with the Board of Commerce.
