Note: Roy Douglass Bryson, M. D.Recognized all over Custer County as one of the most highly-skilled surgeons of this region, Dr. Roy Douglass Bryson, of Callaway, is enjoying a very large practice in his special branch of the medical profession, and is holding the confidence of the public at large as well as that of his many patients. He was born April 21, 1883, a son of Douglass and Laura E. (Howland) Bryson, the former of whom was a son of Silas Bryson, and was but a child when his parents moved to Nebraska in 1858, locating in Adams, where Silas Bryson was engaged in teaching for thirty-five years, and became one of the active factors in his community, and a leader of the local Democratic party.
At the early age of twenty-seven years, when Doctor Bryson was but twenty months old, Douglass Bryson passed away, and his widow subsequently took her family to Thomas County, Nebraska, and still later to Sterling, Johnson County, Nebraska. She was married second to the late Frank Hutchison, and, once more widowed, now resides in Crab Orchard, Nebraska.
Growing up in Adams, Doctor Bryson received his academic instruction in its excellent high school, and his medical training in Cotner University, from which he was graduated with the degree of Doctor of Medicine, after which he began the practice of his profession in Udall, Cowley County, Kansas. After continuing there for five years, in 1912 he located permanently in Callaway, where he has since continued, with the exception of the time he was in the army. While in the university he took an active part in athletics, and played left end on the Varsity football team. In political faith he is a Republican, and is now central committeeman of his party, and secretary of the local school board.
Doctor Bryson commanded a company in the One Hundred and Sixty-eighth Ambulance Regiment on the front in France, being in the service for two years, lacking fifteen days, and was honorably discharged at Camp Dodge. After he was called into active service in June, 1917, he was trained at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he remained for two months, and then was sent to Camp Mills, from whence he embarked for France. Commissioned a first lieutenant, he was promoted to the rank of captain. His outfit was a company of Michigan men.
Following his discharge from the service Doctor Bryson returned to Callaway and resumed [p.214] his practice. He is an enthusiast with reference to his profession, and keeps fully abreast of its progress by study, reading and attendance on different clinics, including those of the Mayo Brothers, Rochester, Minnesota. Like so many of his honored calling Doctor Bryson has a deep sense of the responsibility resting upon him, and he would rather receive no remuneration than to neglect anyone who has need of his services. For several years he has maintained his own hospital in Callaway, and to it patients come from a wide area to get the benefit of his skill and knowledge. He is president of the Custer County Medical Society, vice president of the Nebraska State Medical Association, councillor of the Ninth Nebraska Medical District, and a member of the American Medical Association. He belongs to the local post of the American Legion, and was its commander for two years. In Masonry he has been advanced to the fourteenth degree.
Doctor Bryson married Miss Fern Murphy, who studied voice culture and instrumental music in Cotner University. Doctor and Mrs. Bryson have one son of their own, James Douglass, who is now fifteen years old, and they are also rearing with parental love and care an adopted son, Melvin.
