This info is from a Lucinda Means White living in California at the time. At the top it is dated 19th Jan 1951 Friday A.M., copied 31 Dec 1966. Calimesa, CA is mentioned, about 8 miles from where Lucinda lives. Daniel Means, brother to Edward (our ancestor) is Lucinda's grandfather.
The Means info I sent is from the book "Means Family of America. The dates for Hugh Means birth are different. The book says he was born 8 Oct 1757. Lucinda has 6 Oct 1751.
I also found Hugh Means on an 1801 tax list, Neshannoct, Mercer Co, PA. He paid taxes on a grist mill.
*Edward Means is found on the 1850 Mercer Co. census, living with his daughter, Nancy Jane, m. Benjamin Tayler.
28 Benjamin Tayler age 30 1500 acres b. Deleware page 66
Nancy J. age 22 b. Mercer Co
Robert age 3 b. Mercer
Edward age 4 months b. Mercer
Edward Means age 66 laborer b. PA
I underlined the name Sarah Huston. In the 1850 census, Margaret Cooper ( wife of Henry) is listed under John Cooper. There is a Dirkson Huston living with her. He is a son from her first marriage. Maybe this is where Hamilton Huston Cooper got his middle name.

There has been a lot of speculation as to his parents but nothing documented. Others say he was born in Bucks County PA. in 1757 but I have not found this doucumented anywhere. I have recently found a book published in the year 1897 called "Biographical Sketche's of Lawrence County PA 1897". One of the biographys is of Hugh Livingston Means my great uncle and our Hughs grandson. It states that Hugh Sr. came to this country from Ireland as a young man, which would probably explain why he can not be tied-in with any of the early families. My question to you is, do you have or know anyone who has any documents stating that he was born in Bucks County and not Ireland? I would hope his grandson would know where he was born.

Hugh Means, senior, the grandfather of the subject of our writing, was of good, reliable Irish stock, being born on the sea-girt Emerald Isle. Full of life, energy and ambition he struck out for America, when a voting man, to seek his fortune. Wide-awake and willing to work, he soon after his arrival here had mastered the carpenter's trade, which he followed in various localities for some years. Laying by a little competence he bought a farm in Wilmington township, a tract of land that lay in an unimproved state. Mainly by his own efforts, he built first of all a house, then some outer buildings including a barn, and finally a grist-mill; with incessant toil, he put his land in good, productive shape, at the same time profitably conducting his milling business. He had become a true citizen of his adopted country, and in the War of 1812 served honorably in the army which gave England her second whipping, and taught her to respect American rights as equal to any nation's rights on the globe. Our subject's grandfather departed this life in 1838, having accomplished far more than the ordinary man, and leaving behind him a sturdy and well-reared family of boys who were named in order: Henry; Thomas; Daniel; Hugh; and William. Mr. Means, during his busy life, was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, and bore a prominent part in many other walks of life. His political leanings were with the Democratic party, in whose councils he was always a valued adviser. He was twice elected to the office of sheriff of Mercer Co., Pa., an office calling for in those days the greatest amount of hardihood and dauntless energy.

Mr. J. L. Edwards
Dear Sir
With due defference to the motion which prompted you to place the
consideration of Mrs. Means claim among the suspended cases - permit me to
express my regret that such has been the case, for if there is a single
applicant, that from physical frailities should stand highest in the list
for immediate action on, it does seem to me that Mrs. Means is that person -
totally blind in addition to all her other afflictions, she really needs
immediate relief - and can there be any doubt in your mind as to her being
entitled to the benefit of the Act of 4 July '36. Isn't her (sic) the very
case that that humane Congress had in their mind's eye when it was passed -
and has not her claim been proven clearly in the best manner that the nature
of her case will admit of - Mr. __?___ who was present at her marriage -
the Rev. (Wm. Or Mr.) Henry will inform you as respectable as any man now
breathing - and the other testimony is equally entitled to credit - I so
hope then that you will be good enough to act on this matter at once, by so
doing you will not only be carrying out the praiseworthy right of the act,
but also be personally instrumental in causing the heart of this blind widow
to leap with joy -
Yours with respect
