Cowden, William Kerr (b. 02 JAN 1822, d. 17 JUL 1888)

Note: William Kerr Cowden, the son of Matthew B Cowden and Mary Wallace, was born jan 5 1833, in Lower Paxtang township, dauphin Co., Pa. He was brought up a farmer, receiving such facilities of education as the schools of the township afforded prior to the adoption of the common-school system. He continued the occupation of a farmer until 1868, when he removed to Harrisburg and engaged in the coal and lumber business, subsequently establishing a planning-mill. For a decade of years he has been one of the inspectors of the Dauphin County prison. Mr. Cowden marred Elizabeth M Elder, daughter of Joshua Elder and Mary C. Gillmor.

COWEN, Margaret (b. 1694, d. 1749)

Note: In October or November 1749, William Magill died at the age of about seventy-nine. For some unknown reason, his widow Margaret "renounced all benefit or advantage under her husband's will," which was proven in the county court on 29 November 1749. Perhaps this seemingly unusual course of action was connected with the fact of her being William's second wife. Nevertheless, when accounts against Magill's estate were finally paid on 15 November 1758, Margaret Magill was one of nine individuals who each received 9 pounds, 1 shilling, and sixpence from Hugh Campell and Robert Cravens, the will's executors.
