A century and a half of Pittsburg and her people
The father of Ulrich West was a blacksmith and served in the German army. In 1824 he immigrated to the United States, landing in New York and thence proceeding to Clarion county, Pennsylvania, where he bough a farm in what was called the “Cap” settlement. Thenceforth he turned his attention to agriculture, but at the same time continued to work at his trade. His death was the result of an injury inflicted by an unruly horse. He was the father of the following children, all of whom were born in Germany and brought by himself and wife to this country: Aldinger, Ulrich and Peter, who became the owner of a large farm and livery stable in Clarion county, where he died.
Ulrich West, son of the emigrant, was eight years old when his parents landed in New York, and he grew up in the home farm in Clarion county. He aquired from his father much knowledge of the blacksmith’s trade, but made agriculture his life-work. When a young man he went to Butler county and settled in Summit township, the latter years of his life being spent in Butler, in the same county. He served several terms as constable and street commissioner of this town and in politics was a life-long Democrat. He and his wife were members of the Roman Catholic church.
Ulrich West married, in Butler county, Barnhart Ena Eyth, and their children were: Elizabeth, wife of Wallace McQuiston, died in Butler county; Joseph L, of whom later; John, who served eighteen months in the Seventh Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry, Army of the Cumberland, married Mary Bond and resides in Butler; Jacob, married Mary Collins (Zuver) and died in 1907 (1906), in Bradford, Pennsylvania; and Margaret. The mother of these children died about 1892 and the death of the father occurred about 1901.

BURIAL: The following records for Mount View Cemetery have been compiled from three sources: A typed record from 1947 on microfilm at the LDS library, a DAR list compiled by walking through the cemetery and writing down tomb stone markings and a cemetery list from Oak Lawn Cemetery. (Oak Lawn Cemetery was the first cemetery in Olean. All burials before 1900 would have been there. Since the area around Oak Lawn had become residential by the 1890's and the cemetery was in poor condition, all graves were removed to the then new Mount View Cemetery in 1906.)
