May 26, 1887, Olean Democrat, Olean, NY-
- A Fiery Visitation, A Bow of wooden buildings on Main Street, in Allegany, Wiped out - The citizens of Allegany village were aroused from their peaceful slumbers Tuesday a.m. by the glare of a conflagration and the shouts of excited men and boys. The fire, which was probably of incendiary origin, started in the rear of Wm. Spraker's general store, on the north side of Main street, opposite the Ward hotel, about 3 o'clock. mre Perkins and a boarder occupying rooms over the store came near being roasted to death, and Mrs. Perkins was carried out through the fire department the row of wooden buildings along main street southeast from Spraker's store were plainly doomed and as soon as possible the occupants began removing the furniture and contents, while the fire was rapidly devouring the tinder-like structures, one by one.Across Harmon avenue from Spraker's store stood the Allegany house, a brick veneered hotel owned by Mrs. Margaret hogan, and on which there was no a dollar of insurance. the building caught fire and burned to the ground, in spite of all that could be done to save it. After licking up everything for about three hundred feet along theat side of Main street, in the opposite direction from the Allegany house, the progress of the fire was finally stayed by the citizens by dint of determined efforts, at Michael Collin's marble shop, which was partially torn down, thus saving Gasper's furniture store and preventing further destruction. - Michael Collins, loss on Marble Shop, and contents $200. Amply insured by Abrams and Sons and W H Mandeville & Co.
